-Arrival (*Bologna, BLQ is the recommended airport).
-Piero will meet you at the airport and escort you to Hotel Taddeo e Federico in the heart of the beautiful village, Sant’Angelo in Vado, and within walking distance of shops, markets, restaurants and village life unspoiled by time.
- Take time to settle in, unpack and explore the village a bit before we all meet up.
- Nancy, and our wonderful host and native Marchegiano, Piero Pagliardini, will welcome us over drinks and give us an overview of Painting Brilliant Florals and the days to come. Then pizza night! Enjoy the best pizza in town in an open air dinner. A stroll, a nightcap, and a good night’s sleep.
- Enjoy a local breakfast at the hotel of cappuccino and fresh pastries, followed by our first painting class with Nancy located next to a 1,000-year-old monastery. We will provide your medium, solvent and towels.
Over the course of the week, Nancy will teach you how to simplify shapes, brighten colors, add drama and paint loosely with confident brush strokes.
-Lunch at Oasi San Benedetto, hand-prepared by the talented Chef Patrizia Carlo.
After lunch, you’ll have time to return to the hotel to rest and freshen up.
-Late afternoon Nancy and Piero will pick you up to go to Urbino, the city considered the center of Renaissance! We'll visit an Italian art supplies store in Raphael’s childhood hometown, where you’ll have the chance to explore and buy local goodies. Then time to wander the main squares and winding medieval pathways as you’re immersed in local color, texture, and flavors.
-Happy hour in the town square, followed by a Marchigiano dinner and gelato at one of our favorite restaurants.
-Pastries (or le paste) and cappuccino at your hotel.
- Morning class with Nancy. Nancy will demonstrate how to paint with brilliant, transparent color, using flowers in the studio to inspire your palette. You'll receive plenty of individual attention in this very small class, with students working at their own pace.
-Light lunch provided (aka in Italy – two courses only), and time to return to the hotel.
-Afterward we will drive through the Le Marche countryside for an afternoon trip to Cartoceto, a village famous for the best and only DOP olive oil imported from Le Marche. We'll visit the inimitable Vittorio Beltrami, - www.gastronomiabeltrami.com. "The Einstein of Cheese," says Lydia Bastianich, and not just because he looks like Albert Einstein but because he is a genius cheese maker. His pecorino di fossa - a sheep’s milk cheese wrapped in grape leaves, and buried under stone for 90 days is indescribably intense, earthy and like nothing you have ever tasted. From the cheese cellar, we'll walk over to his shop where the family Beltrami will prepare us an in-depth sampling of the Beltrami cheeses, cured meats, and breads, with wine pairings along with house made sweets.
(*Please note a separate dinner is not mentioned this day because our late afternoon tasting usually leaves our painters stuffed until morning!)
-Choose your own adventure! Breakfast and OPTIONAL early morning TRUFFLE HUNT with professional local guide. Our seasoned truffle hunter, along with his dog, will lead us on an autumn walk through the forest in search of truffles. Mud boots provided! If hiking isn't your thing, spend the morning shopping, relaxing in a cafe and exploring local treasures in the village.
-Reunite for an authentic lunch at Castello della Pieve, the characteristic medieval castle, set 550 meters above sea level in the municipal area of Mercatello sul Metauro. In 1301 Dante Alighieri’s exile was decreed from this tiny village.
-Afternoon class. Nancy will work with you to help finish up your first painting project, and introduce you to some new and exciting ways to find inspiration using simple objects and complementary colors to set up beautiful flower arrangements to paint. In this relaxed a la carte workshop, you can choose your own projects to work from, or paint along with the group from fresh flowers. The focus will be on enjoying the experience, and immersing yourself in the region as well as the lesson.
-That night we’ll enjoy a relaxed dinner at our favorite local Osteria.
-Leisurely morning to sip cappuccino and people watch.
-Load up to visit the neighboring village of Apecchio for the Annual White Truffle Festival!
-Once a year the town airs out its old wine cellars and turns these secret rooms into repurposed wine bars. Float from one wine cellar, or cantina, to the next, enjoying the variety of local and national wines paired with savory truffle-based delicacies. Each cantina has its own theme – from traditional (eat and drink at long, wooden picnic tables), to indulgent (buy the cantina mug, and enjoy free refills the rest of the weekend), to extreme (these cantine have been known to pack in DJ’s, dance floors, and motorcycles into the limited 100 sq.ft. space). Revel in the town’s festivities, ranging from street artists, to market booths, to live music. Buy roasted chestnuts on the corner or crostini with liver pate and truffle shavings from the local butcher. There is something for everyone at the Truffle Festival of Le Marche and a reason why it has put this region on the map! You are free to explore on your own or use me as your guide. Either way, I will be nearby at all times to recommend restaurants, wine cellars, activities and anything else you need.
-Group dinner in a rustic cantina amidst the white truffle festival!
-Wake up to the sounds of street vendors setting up their booths. Enjoy a local breakfast at the hotel (have you tried the chocolate pastries yet?), and a leisurely stroll through the traveling open-air market.
-Meet for a private gelato making class!!! Get your hands dirty with local gelato expert, Francesco, who will teach you the secrets to making one of Italy's favorite desserts.
-Lunch at Oasi San Benedetto
-Last day of class with Nancy! We will finish up our paintings and review lessons shared. Students will be invited to paint along with Nancy, or work independently from their photos and treasures found in the markets that week. Nancy will help you prepare your paintings for your journey home, sharing some simple, inexpensive and lightweight ways to insert them into your luggage for worry free travel.
-Time to rest at the hotel and pack
-That evening, we will follow a windy road to visit the last village along the Metauro River for a farewell dinner – in a truly off-the-beaten-path location.
